The areas of life that cause struggle and frustration are usually indicated by the house position of Ketu. The deep imbalance is with the Sign. It is important to understand the Sign placement of the Nodes but the battle is fought in the House placement.

The Nodes always cause problems in the Houses they occupy. The problems are there because of the security paradigm of Ketu and the inability to commit or really go for the placement of Rahu.

Ketu is an uptight, highly scrutinizing planet that wants absolute perfection. Rahu is a planet where we pretend, where we are not genuine and where we have unrealistic hopes and expectations.

The Third and Ninth Houses are transitional houses, houses of moving from one thing to the next. Rahu and Ketu cause the native to be stuck when they reside in these houses. They are stuck on something because they cannot transition into the Rahu house. They may do a lot of actions but then become stagnant and cannot move to the next level of experience. The antidote is to transition into the Rahu house.

Generally, these are easier Nodal positions because when the Rahu area of life is embraced, the Ketu position moves onto the next level of understanding. This facilitates a better transition into something else.

Ketu in the Third House has a theme of progressing and will improve over time even if there is a setback. It is a bit of an advantage to have Rahu or Ketu in the Third House. A general rule in astrology is that malefics do well in Upachayas (growing houses) and benefics do well in Angles and Trines.

The Ketu house is ultimately where we will find happiness after we have progressed with the Rahu house.

Ketu in Third, Rahu in Ninth

Ketu in Third = Uptight about mental concepts and how things work. Rahu in Third = false ideas and pretending to understand how things work. This position can indicate learning disabilities.

Anytime Ketu occupies a social house (3,7 or 11) the person needs to break free from people and do more of their own thing.

“If I can rely on my strength, I’ll be OK” says Ketu in the Third House. Strength indicates intellect because strength in humans is intellect. Our intellect develops a knowingness to do something that is the 3rd House.

A child is taught initiatory instructions and how things work. This understanding of the way things work has been done through experimentation from trial and error, from making an effort, observing the result and inventing a methodology of doing it in an efficient, effective way. This is the job of the intellect.

The security paradigm of Ketu in the Third House is “as long as I can trust my intellect and know how something works, everything will be OK.”

Ketu is like Mars so its house placement indicates an area of life for which we will fight. If ideas about how things work are challenged, a stubborn and aggressive struggle will ensue. It is nearly impossible to win an argument with Ketu in the Third House, they are very determined and express themselves powerfully. Ketu in Third House can give actors who have dynamic personalities on screen. Strength of conviction is put into speech.

Sometimes they cannot acknowledge another idea is better than theirs due to their security paradigm but they carry a lot of self-doubt about what they know. Ketu is hyper-aware of what it does not have.

The Ninth House is the house of belief systems and this is where Ketu in the Third will struggle. Belief does not equal Truth. Belief just means, “I believe this to be true and I’m going to try it to see if it works.” The Ninth House represents teachers and when they give instructions the student says, “I believe in you.”

When it comes to doing anything new, they cannot just jump into the project, they must research it, check it out, double and triple check it. A myriad of ways exist to approach a project or situation. Ketu wants an absolute, definitive answer so confusion can manifest around the best way to do something.

Third House security comes from knowing we can figure out how to do something as necessary. But Ketu in the 3rd House wants everything figured out before anything is tried. Fear of having faith something will work out is prominent. It is important to trust in the natural ingenuity (Third House). Ketu in the Third House rarely believes the astrologer or predictions because belief comes only after experience.

The Ninth House is the road to get to higher places in life. The Tenth House is the highest place. We all want to get to the highest place. That is why planets in the tenth always do well. The Ninth House is to believe in something that has not been shown. Ketu in the Third must learn to embrace what has not been experienced.

The Third House is the House of will which means using the intellect because that is where humans succeed. Due to the strong will, Ketu in the Third House is considered a good position.

Another important aspect of the Third House is our associates. “If I can do things in association with other people, everything will be OK.” “If I’m on a team, everything will be OK.” Problems exist because doing things in association with others limits one’s own way of being. The Ninth House is a Dharma house in that we are following our natural way of being, being true to ourselves. “When the student is ready for greater self-discovery (9th House), the teacher appears.” The teacher will bring out what the native truly is. That is a solo process, a process about one thing only, YOU.

Conflicts arise due to what we feel we need to do for our self-discovery and what our associates expect of us. Dharma houses are all about feeling good about ourselves. Kama houses indicate getting rewards based on others’ opinions of us. Ketu in the Third House needs to learn to do things where they feel good about themselves even if their associates disapprove.

The Ninth House is following the path that is truly right for the individual. After the teacher is discovered an acquisition of new associates emerges as fellow students of said teacher. This is the way Rahu and Ketu work. We go to Rahu and then back to Ketu with a better perspective. We enter Rahu’s house and grow, then *poof*, like magic, we are back in the Ketu house where it is more fulfilling. This process takes time because Rahu gives the effects of Saturn (Kala or Time). Rahu is the work that must be done to make the Ketu House, the only House and planet that matters at the end of our lives, better.

Ketu in the Ninth, Rahu in the Third

Ketu in Ninth indicates an overly stringent attitude around teachings, beliefs, ideals, religion and culture. These attitudes are not healthy because all cultures and religious expressions evolve. The culture and religion needed today is not what was needed one thousand years ago and will not be needed years into the future.

This is one of the smoothest positions for the Nodes. It is quite auspicious to have Rahu in the Third House. One reason is because Rahu occupies a growing house that only requires effort. The Third House is where the effort equals results.

In any growing house, we begin to work on Rahu at a younger age. The issues around the Signs are also developed earlier than expected. Any planets with Rahu will also progressively increase over time. It is more advantageous to have Rahu in an Upachaya than Ketu.

Ketu in the Ninth says, “As long as I believe this, everything will be OK.” The belief system is the security paradigm and it can be belief in religion, culture, or parents. The idea is that something more powerful than the person exists in which to believe. Everything will be okay because there is something bigger that will get the person through the smaller adversities. Those with Ketu in the Ninth House naturally tend to have more faith. At some point, the realization is made that faith is not enough to get through the day. The practice of the belief system must be done to acquire any results. Believing is not enough, it is effort to manifest the truth of the belief. At some point, the belief system fails. Their parents kick them out or their culture or spiritual path fails.

Experiences will give countless opportunities to doubt what we know. A belief is something worth trying to discover if it is true. The challenge of Rahu in the Third is to make that sincere effort. We apply ourselves in steps, we try something and it helps us, every time we try, we get closer to the Truth. We are always getting closer to the Truth.

When Rahu maturation arrives, some crisis will emerge around belief, culture or parents. It could be a parent dying. Rahu in the Third House will then get serious about experimental knowledge.

A culture is a group of people that have similar beliefs that allow them to live in harmony with each other (9th House). Culture is important and develops along the needs of the people. Opposite the Ninth House of culture is the Third House of competition. Any culture will always have competition from other cultures. Anytime a belief is formed, whether religious or cultural, it will always encounter competition. Proving beyond a shadow of a doubt a belief is correct and the competition has no value is impossible. Beliefs and culture adapt and grow due to competition.

The Third House is travel. We are travelling to our destination through trial and error or through travelling away from our culture to something that will work better. Ketu in Ninth House desperately needs the belief system to evolve. In testing a belief system, errors will be revealed. When an error is discovered, something new is brought in.
