The Chaturthamsa or Fourth Divisional Chart is one of the most neglected divisional charts or vargas because there is limited information about it. The D4 or Chaturthamsa is related to “Bhagya” which means fortune in the sense of receiving one’s share. This divisional chart gives the native their share, the share they were destined to have.

As always, this varga must be viewed in conjunction with the Birth Chart. The Birth Chart is the tree and the vargas are the branches. If the tree does not support a lot of fortune, or a massive share of wealth or property then the branches certainly will not. If the D4 is well-disposed with a lot of exalted planets, but the Birth Chart is only mediocre for wealth, then the person will have above average wealth but not overwhelmingly so.

How to Calculate

Each Sign is divided into four sections of 7.5 degrees each. If a planet or house cusp falls within the first section, it remains in the same Sign as it occupies in the Birth Chart. If a planet or house cusp occupies the second section (7.5 to 15 degrees) then the planet goes to the fourth Sign from the Sign it occupies in the Birth Chart. If the planet or house cusp occupies the third section, (15 to 22.5 degrees) then it goes to the seventh Sign from the Sign it occupies in the Birth Chart. If a planet or house cusp occupies the fourth section (22.5 to 30 degrees) then it goes to the tenth Sign from the Sign it occupies in the Birth Chart. (Planet or House Cusp).

Indications, Important Planets and House Cusps

The Chaturthamsa or Fourth divisional chart reveals the fortune we acquire. It does not show loss or that with which we have misfortune and loss. For loss and misfortune, it is necessary to examine the D30 or Trimsamsa. In addition, the Chaturthamsa shows how the native acquires and uses their fortune with each planet and every aspect of life revealed by the location of planets and house cusps.

The D4 is a chart that shows one’s residence and the type of residence in which they reside, the environment of that residence and if a person will live in a foreign country.

Mercury is the fourth planet and therefore the most important planet in the Chaturthamsa or fourth divisional chart. Jaimini calls number four a conceptual number because it manifests security and stability. Four is associated with Earth. Mercury rules the Earth element and as such is a manifesting planet. Mercury is the planet of portions or shares so in its essence it corresponds to the D4 because it is the divisional chart of shares. Mercury rules over coverings and walls and containers so it holds a portion of something. If Mercury is well disposed in the Birth Chart and the D4, then the person gets a lot of opportunities to increase their share in life and they manifest success more easily.

Secondarily, Mars is an important planet in the Chaturthamsa because it rules land, buildings and real estate. If Mars is well-disposed in the Chaturthamsa, the native will inherit or buy valuable real estate or the real estate they own will produce valuables for them.

The most important house cusps in the D4 are the fourth, first and seventh. The fourth house cusp is important because the Chaturthamsa is a derivative of the fourth house. The first or Ascendant of the D4 is important because all the numbers within four add up to ten, then 1 + 0 equals one. The seventh house cusp is important because four squared equals sixteen and one plus six equals seven. Also, with the concept of bhavat bhavam or “house from the house” the fourth from the fourth is the seventh.

The first bhava is important because it represents the body where the Soul resides and having a body in human form is fortunate. A healthy body is fortunate but just having a body regardless of disability or health issues is a fortune in order to express oneself on Earth. The first house cusp is also the path in life and will show the overall fortune of the path the person walks in life.

The seventh bhava or house cusp rules business and business partners that can make us fortunate in life. It also rules the public with whom we can have fortunate relations. The seventh house rules over exchange and trade with others that can make us fortunate. It also rules our spouse or partner who has a huge influence over our attitude and well-being. In some cases, we can become wealthy through the partner. A supportive partner provides a strong foundation for success. The seventh cusp in the D4 will show whether we will be fortunate with our partner, the public and our business.

The Energies or Deities of the Chaturthamsa or Fourth Divisional Chart

Each Chaturthamsa has a deity associated with it. These deities reveal how the person finds fortune with that planet.

Sanaka “Former Ancient”

Planets falling within 0 to 7.5 degrees of a Sign in the Birth Chart are ruled by Sanaka. These planets remain in the same Sign as they occupy in the Birth Chart. Sanaka is a deity that indicates that which exists from the beginning. Planets here indicate the fortune we have always had, from our earliest memories, even disembodied or past life memories. The indications of planets falling here is something we know well, we can count on, something we utilize easily. If the planet is in bad dignity and joined the nodes or malefics, we have less connection to that planet as a force in our lives that gives us fortune. We may have always had that talent or indication but it did not give us fortune.

Sananda “Having Joy”

Planets falling within 7.5 and 15 degrees of a Sign in the Birth Chart are ruled by Sananda. These planets go to the fourth Sign in the Chaturthamsa from the original Sign in the Birth Chart. Indications of planets and house cusps located here give fortune because they provide joy to the native. The person finds happiness with these things.

Sanat-Kumara “Ever Youthful”

Planets falling within 15 to 22.5 degrees of a Sign in the Birth Chart are ruled by Sanat-Kumara. They represent those things that always give something new to the native or they are able to adapt to and benefit from new phenomena ruled by that planet. If the planet is well-disposed, the person will have more luck with new things and new situations in regards to that planet.

Sanatana “Eternal”

Planets falling within 22.5 to 30 degrees of a Sign in the Birth Chart are ruled by Sanatana. This is the tenth Sign in the Chaturthamsa from the Sign occupied by these planets in the Natal Chart. The indications of planets and house cusps falling here give fortune because they last forever and always remain, even after periods of loss and endings. These planets also fall within the Durvas Drekkanas which indicate transition, so what remains after the transition is indicated in the Chaturthamsa.
