In Jaimini Astrology, certain writing yogas or combinations exist that will indicate the native will be an author. These yogas do not identify how successful the native will be, if they will be famous, if they can make a living by writing or if they will become wealthy by writing. Those things depend upon certain Jaimini Raj Yogas. These writing yogas do show the native has writing ability and if they will write anything that is seen by others, such as a blog, screenplay, novel, video game, technical manual, etc.
To use this technique, it is necessary to identify the Pada. The Pada, in Jaimini Astrology, means “foot”. It is the end or result of your life but it is also a component of your identity, it is what you are moving towards as you live. Some people call the Pada the Arudha Lagna. Arudha means “image” in Sanskrit, so Arudha Lagna is the image that arises from the Ascendant. Jaimini never uses the words “Arudha Lagna” rather he uses “Pada”. “Arudha Lagna” is mentioned in Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra. For practical purposes, it is necessary to know that Pada and Arudha Lagna refer to the same thing. It is the accumulation of your experiences which pushes you to your “foot” which is the Sign of the Pada and any planets contained therein.
The Pada has much the same function as the Atmakaraka (soul indicator). It can show career like the Atmakaraka. Everything that applies to the Atmakaraka also applies to the Pada, so it is like a secondary Atmakaraka.
In addition to the Pada, there is the Upapada. Upa means secondary, so Upapada is the secondary Pada. It is as important as the Pada and it can be more important due to certain factors.
How to calculate the Pada
Count the number of Signs from the Ascendant to the lord of the Ascendant, then count the same amount from the lord to the Pada. Always begin ‘1’ from the Ascendant or lord of the Ascendant. Count zodiacally, always in a forward direction (for some Jaimini techniques you count backwards for feminine Signs).
For example: If your Ascendant is Aries and Mars occupies Gemini, the lord Mars is three Signs away from Aries. Then you would count three from Gemini to Leo. Leo is the Pada.
There are two exceptions to this rule. If the lord of the Ascendant occupies the 4th or 10th from the Ascendant, the Pada always goes to the 4th Sign from the Ascendant. If the ruler of the Ascendant occupies the Ascendant or 7th house, the Pada automatically goes to the 10th house.
To find the Upapada, use the same technique but count from the Sign of the Midheaven (10th house cusp) in the Campanus system, rather than the 10th Sign from the Ascendant. Sometimes the 10th Sign from the Ascendant is not the same as the Sign holding the 10th house cusp.
The Midheaven is the secondary Ascendant. Many opinions exist as to how to locate the Upapada, some say it is the Pada of the 2nd house and others say it is the Pada of the 12th house. The secondary Ascendant is the 10th house cusp because it is the most important house for identity after the first house. This has been discovered through the research of Ernst Wilhelm.
Everything that applies to the Upapada or Atmakaraka also applies to the Pada. In the Jaimini system of astrology three identity factors exist: the Atmakaraka, the Pada and the Upapada. The Sign of the Atmakaraka is most important in the Navamsa which is called the Swamsa or Swa for short. The Swa is where you discover aspects about the career, spiritual life, the nature of the spouse, types of illnesses, etc. These indications will also apply to the Pada and Upapada in the Rasi (Birth Chart).
To discover which is stronger between the Pada and Upapada, examine how many starry grahas (Sun through Saturn, not including the nodes or the outer planets) occupy those Signs. A Sign with a planet is stronger than one without. If the same amount of planets occupy the Pada and Upapada, take the Sign with the planets in higher dignity. If the planets are in the same dignity, then consider if the Sign is Cardinal, Fixed or Dual. Cardinal Signs are weakest, followed by Fixed Signs and Dual Signs are the strongest. If the planets occupy the same type of Sign, look to the strength of the lords to ascertain which one is stronger. If the strength is still undecided, look to the planet that is in highest degrees to discover which is strongest.
Writing Yogas
For writing yogas, the Moon must be involved. The Moon is the mind and everything written comes from the Mind. All entertainment and how-to manuals have usually been written down first from someone’s mind, from their intellect, so the Moon is always involved in these combinations.
One of these requirements must apply:
- The Moon is conjoined the Atmakaraka in the Navamsa
- The Moon is conjoined the Atmakaraka in the Rasi
- The Moon is the Atmakaraka
- The Atmakaraka occupies the Sign of Cancer
- The Moon occupies the Pada or Upapada
- The Moon occupies the 2nd, 3rd or 5th Sign from the Atmakaraka, Pada or Upapada
In addition to the Moon’s requirements, Venus, Jupiter or Mercury must occupy the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 5th Sign from the Atmakaraka, Pada or Upapada (Use the stronger of the Pada and Upapada per the aforementioned guidelines). For this technique, count forward for masculine Signs and backward for Feminine Signs.
Jupiter is the planet that gives writing ability in wisdom, philosophy and spirituality. Venus is the planet of poetry, legends and tales, like speculative fiction. Mercury is the planet of instructions, how-to and technical manuals. These rules usually apply but not all the time. You will see Mercury influencing the Moon and AK or Pada in the charts of prominent fiction authors, or Venus in the writing yoga but the person writes technical manuals, so this rules is a general guideline only.
