The Saptamsa is unique from every other varga because the deities are different than other types of Deities. All of the interpretive information for the Saptamsa comes from Yavana Jataka. In this text only lords are used, not a chart.
What does the Saptamsa indicate?
The mystery of the Saptamsa begins because Parasara names it as the varga of children but the fifth house is the bhava of children. Two houses as divisional charts are skipped, namely five and six. The houses of importance named by Parasara goes from the Chaturthamsa (fourth house varga) to the Saptamsa (seventh house varga). The reason is that the Saptamsa is not the physical child, the child as a person is represented by the fifth house cusp in all the vargas. You must read the fifth house cusp in the Birth Chart to find out about the child’s body, read the fifth cusp in D30 to discover their diseases and health, the fifth cusp in Navamsa for the child’s marriage potential and so on. The Saptamsa represents creating our children which is a seventh house indication because the seventh house is sexual intercourse. Humans need a partner to have sexual intercourse and create a child. The seventh house is the creation we are able to create with another person.
The seventh house rules death and children are our legacy which is what lives on after we die. The seventh house, along with the first, is the path we walk in life and as we walk that path, we create things. When we create it is usually with the help other people but not always. For most people, their legacy is their children with which they need a partner to create. As a result, the Saptamsa reveals a lot about our partners, the people we are attracted to and who are attracted to us. This varga shows the romantic and sexual life of a person. It is the main varga to analyze when ascertaining whether a person will be happy in their romantic and sexual life and what kind of partners they attract.
A person may have the destiny to get married as seen in the navamsa but not have any children as seen by a harmed Saptamsa. Or a person can create children with lots of different people but relationships do not last and they never get married. Children are not tied to marriage, they are something that two people produce together.
The person can produce children with someone else or they produce a legacy because of their relationship to the public and they are remembered by such after they die. The seventh house also rules the public. For a person’s dynasty to be large and influential, they must have a good Saptamsa.
The creative juices are either embraced by a woman to make a child or a man’s sperm or embraced by the public to make a life of their own. In each case, a dynasty requires embrace. It is the dynasty we create with the help of the embrace of another. The Saptamsa indicates those things we are able to do because of the embrace of someone else or because of the public.
The ideal is to bring Jupiter up to the third Eye (Cancer) where he is exalted and provides wisdom rather than drop him down into the bottom chakra, ruled by Saturn where he is debilitated and looks for satisfaction of the creative energies through physical pleasure.
How to Calculate
The Saptamsa is not divided to an even number of degrees and minutes and seconds. The Saptamsa is a little over four degrees and calculator is needed to divide the Sign into seven portions evenly to calculate the Saptamsa of a planet or house cusp if you do not have software. But generally each Saptamsa measures slightly over four degrees.
Odd Signs always begin with the Signs themselves. Aries starts at Aries and goes seven Signs to Libra, Gemini starts with Gemini and goes seven Signs to Sagittarius, Leo begins with Leo and goes seven signs to Aquarius. In even Signs, the first Saptamsa is the seventh from that Sign. The first section of Taurus is Scorpio and last is Taurus. The first Saptamsa of Cancer is Capricorn and last is Cancer, the first Saptamsa of Virgo is Pisces and last is Virgo.
Important Planets and Bhavas in Saptamsa
Jupiter is the fifth planet and the most important planet in the Saptamsa. Though the Saptamsa is the seventh division, it is the fifth varga Parasara discusses and fifth in the scheme of Shodasavargas.
Jupiter is the producer of children and rules the Svadhisthana (sex) chakra where resides the creative energies. Jupiter is creative intelligence. A strong Jupiter is important to have in the Saptamsa to access the best possible creative potential.
Jupiter is not commonly known as a hypercreative, sexual planet because he represents the Guru, spirituality, wisdom, etc. One of the characteristics of Hamsa Yoga which is having Jupiter in an angle in its own or exaltation Sign, is never having one’s sexual urges satisfied because the native is so full of creative force, they can never expend it all.
Jupiter is wisdom. If a person cannot creatively think for themselves, they can never be wise.
The secondary planet of importance is Venus which reveals the quality of relationships the person is having and if they are having fulfilling sexual relationships. A frustrated Venus in Saptamsa shows a frustrated Venus in the sex life. Venus will also reveal the comfort level in the relationship.
The most important house cusp is the seventh house cusp. The seventh represents the embrace of the partner that can lead to offspring. It is also the embrace of the public that can give a legacy. It is necessary to contact another living entity whether the partner or the public in order to create a dynasty.
The Saptamsa shows how in sync we are with our partner. It is more important than the Navamsa to reveal how healthy or dysfunctional our relationship really is.
The secondary house cusp in importance is the first house. Add up all the numbers in seven which is 1+2+3+4+5+6+7=28. 2+8=10, 1+0=1. The first house indicates the body and its health and is the seventh from the seventh utilizing the concept of bhavat bhavam (house from the house). Having a more attractive form can make us more sexually appealing.
Regarding someone who wants to create for the public, a strong first house gives stronger charisma. The public does not usually want to embrace someone who is not charismatic or has weak magnetism.
Another important house is the fourth house because seven squared equals 49. 4+9=13, 1+3=4. Squaring the number shows the results of that number. The fourth house cusp is where we house our dynasty, our little kingdom. The home gives the foundation to build our lives.
If we are creating for the public, the foundation of what the public is embracing and how that grows is the fourth house cusp. As the dynasty grows, it gets more foundation in the world, a foundation of property, a foundation of wealth, etc. If the fourth house is weak, it can become threatening to the dynasty and starve it out.
Territory needs to grow to support a dynasty. The seventh house is creating children but the fourth is creating room for them in the world. If the fourth cusp is afflicted, the person does not have enough fortune for the dynasty to grow and prosper.
Dynasties are designed to take over the world, some do it rather passively and some do it aggressively. If we analyze plants, trees and flowers, they are designed to do this by releasing pollen, or cubs in the wild, they want to go out and find their territory. It is the life instinct, the instinct of Jupiter, another name for Jupiter is Jiva (Life) and life survives by growing.
Saptamsa Deities
In odd Signs the Saptamsa Deities follow an order. In Even Signs, that order is reversed. The Deities are liquids endowed with the great essence of vitality. These Deities are not gods that live in the sky, they are vital essences that live in foods.
Kshaara
Kshaara is the first Deity which means “corrosive liquid”. Kshaara is the only liquid you do not want to eat because it will poison you. The first Saptamsa is you alone and the entire purpose of the Saptamsa is to have something to with which to create and that something is outside of yourself. Kshaara represents creative energy that does not have a full outlet. The creative juices turn corrosive because they need an outlet or they poison the body and mind.
If someone tries to create a dynasty that does not include children or procreation then under this Saptamsa, they become frustrated because the dynasty will not become rooted in the world due to the public not embracing it fully.
The Kshaara deity restricts the creative potential of any planet it rules.
The Kshaara saptamsas are ruled by the Sun. They are strongly creative but not able to embrace someone else or the public, hence their creations do not produce a legacy. Try to embrace the Sun. It will not happen. The Sun shines brightly but is alone and isolated. People who have many creative indications ruled by Kshaara can be misunderstood creative geniuses or are too timid to put their creations to the public.
Kshiira
The second Saptamsa Deity is the second saptamsa in an odd Sign and sixth saptamsa in an even Sign. This deity means “milk”. Milk is smooth and puts us to sleep so milk is a very contented, smooth and steady creative energy. It is available and ready to nourish. When the opportunity is not there to create, it is stable and peaceful and when the opportunity is there, milk creates steadily. Milk is not hyper-creative and needs a prompt. Milk feeds nourishes the infant and is the only food the baby lives on for the first few months of life. Therefore, planets in Kshiira create with a firm, solid foundation and the energy of their creations are a little more focused and longer-term than some of the other subsequent hyper-creative substances.
Kshiira Saptamsas are ruled by the Moon and the Moon is a planet that factors highly into relationship compatibility and comfort. The Moon is adaptable and can create with most anyone.
Dadhi
The third Saptamsa deity of an odd Sign and fifth of an even Sign is Dadhi which is soured, coagulated milk. Dadhi is like yoghurt in that it is full of vital energy and health. This substance is milk that has been transformed into something else. Planets here excel at taking something already created and transforming it into something even more useful, especially to solve a problem. The creative energy of Dadhi represents a problem that activates our creative vision. People who help those that have fertility issues or those with fertility problems that overcome them by creating something new to help themselves or those who conceive from a problem or violence have planets in Dadhi. The Dadhi person will fight to bring their creative energy to realization.
Mars rules this saptamsa and is the alchemist that transforms things because he rules the Fire element. Mars rules catalysts. The nature of Mars is to fix and solve problems.
Ajya
Ajya rules the fourth saptamsa in both an odd and even Sign. It means “melted ghee” or “melted butter”. In many ways it is the best Saptamsa because planets are creatively consistent in a long-term way. Butter has a lot of fat per gram so there is a lot of energy there. Fat is slow burning and lasts a long time. Planets here create the longest lasting dynasties of any saptamsa. John Lennon has his Jupiter here, the most important planet in the Saptamsa.
Mercury rules this saptamsa and the Earth element. Of course, the Earth element would give the best nourishment to what is manifested on planet Earth. Mercury himself is a manifesting planet, both in transit, in Rasi-aspect and in his Bhadra yoga.
Iksurasa
This saptamsa is the fifth of an odd Sign and third of an even Sign. Iksurasa is “sugar cane Juice”. It also means any juice that is sweet and invigorating. It is a fluid form of vitalizing sugar. This creative energy has more explosive power but for a shorter time. The person can have a lot of children in a short period rather than a lot of children over a long period. The creative energy is not obliged to attach itself to one thing but it is hypercreative and can create with anything. It takes only a brief spark of brilliance to create something lasting in the world however the consistency is lacking. Iksurasa is the most creative but not always the most successful. Iksurasa is like a bull designed to mate with a lot of cows.
The saptamsa Iksurasa is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of creative intelligence. Jupiter is not particular about what he creates, he trusts in life and trusting in life is trusting in God. According to Jaimini, Jupiter does not teach because he is silent.
Madya
Madya is the sixth Saptamsa of an odd Sign and second Saptamsa of an even Sign. Its meaning is “honey”. This deity has a lot of creative energy as well but is more concentrated and sticks to one thing longer. Madya does not explode in hyper-creativity like Iksurasa. This saptamsa will focus and create something it really desires and values. It inclines the person to be a more devoted in their relationships. Ruled by Venus and more like wolves in that they stick with one partner.
Venus is also a Brahmin like Jupiter but he teaches, he tells people what to do. He believes in people, that people can be educated and learn to do something better. Venus trusts in human intelligence and human abilities and tries to prepare humans to have a good life. Jupiter trusts in life in whatever it brings and sees the wisdom in all phenomena without trying to improve upon it.
Suddhajala
The seventh saptamsa of an odd Sign and first of an even Sign. It denotes pure water. Pure water is vitalizing and sustaining. It refreshes but it does not feed. We can only go so long without water and we can go a lot longer without food. It is a relaxed creative energy. Is signifies a person who is happy with what they have created, they created to live and be sustained. It does not have the need to create something great or something that will last, it remains detached after it has created and lets the creation live out its life. Afflicted planets ruled by this essence are things we have created that we cannot let go of, that over which we still want control. The person does not find refreshment or peace in those things.
Saturn rules this saptamsa and Saturn is the Air element. Saturn is just happy to survive, he wants to do the bare minimum to survive through the hardships of life. This creative energy wants to created to avoid or get through hardships and wants these things to last.
